Jensen Platinum Foil
Platinum foil is used as a matrix or support structure for the build-up of all-ceramic restorations. Platinum foil matrixes are commonly used for the build-ups of porcelain jacket crowns (PJC’s), porcelain laminate veneers, and to a lesser extent, porcelain inlays and onlays.
Platinum foil does not readily oxidize, and therefore will not bond to the porcelain. In most cases, the platinum foil is removed and scrapped once the porcelain work is complete. However, with some jacket crown techniques the platinum foil is tin plated and bonded directly to the porcelain. With these techniques, called “platinum reinforced jacket crowns”, the platinum foil remains in the crown and is cemented to the prep. There are no techniques for platinum reinforced veneers; with veneers, the platinum foil is always removed.
